Christine Fletcher – Community Champion
I’ve lived in Gilesgate for 20 years and have been active in the community for most of this time. As a Belmont Parish Councillor I’ve worked hard to deliver positive changes in our area.
I have always had a passion for working in communities and specialised in work with young people and those who unfortunately experience disadvantage. I first came to work in Gilesgate and Belmont in 2000 as Manager for the Pelaw View Centre. Working with local organisations, councillors and churches, I involved over 300 residents in the life of the community centre and developed services and activities to meet local need.
I started the Gilesgate and Belmont Wellbeing Project during the first Covid lockdown in 2020. This group now has over 30 volunteers supporting local people who have been shielding or struggling during this difficult time. I’m also on the Management Committees of Laurel Avenue Community Association and Durham Area Youth.
