The constituency has seen much change from its historical roots in the mining industry to the current day where most people either work in the Service Sector, NHS, various major Offices or the centre of expertise in education and research at Durham University. Residents are right to be proud of their heritage, the Miners Gala, the Lumiere Festival, the excellent Gala Theatre and the many facilities within the area.
We in the Labour Party are also well aware of the challenges faced by many people every day as a consequence of the savage cuts to public services, the NHS, education and welfare systems. The Constituency Labour Party, our M.P. our County and Parish Councillors work tirelessly to represent every resident and to help bring about a fairer, more just and compassionate society.
